Demonstrating earthquake power using sound – a brilliant video of all the quakes of 2011 …

First spotted at Zerohedge over the weekend, I thought I would share this one too as it’s a great example of how to make something abstract clearly understandable.

The method used in the video is sound, with the volume being related to the earthquake magnitude (all quakes over mag 4.5 shown) and the pitch related to the depth of the quake – there is a brief introduction which is easy enough to understand even though the text is in Japanese. Just make sure you have the volume turned up on your speakers when the video gets to around March 2011 and watch Japan buzz with a chain of earthquakes for a full month – don’t jump too much though when the Japanese earthquake itself goes boom! :

The video itself was produced by monoroch but beyond that I am lost as the site is in Japanese but it does have a nice collection of earthquake related videos and imagery.
