Surging oil prices give Saudi Arabia an excuse to build the worlds tallest tower.

Whilst consumers the world over are being gangraped at the petrol pumps, the Arab states are raking in the money and planning new wonders with their windfalls.

From Pravda :

Saudi Arabia is planning another world’s tallest building project. The new tallest building – Kingdom Tower – is expected to be 1,600 meters high. Kingdom Tower (to be built in Jeddah) will be taller than Nakheel Tower in Dubai (1,400 meters). The latter is a project of Australia’s Woods Bago, although the construction of Nakheel Tower has been suspended, RIA Novosti reports with reference to Arabian Business website.
Investments in the construction of the tower may reach up to $30 billion, the website said.

Running an old petrol Defender I think I will have contributed to a fair few feet of that thing when it finally gets built.

I just hope they have entertainment planned in the lifts :

The 5,280-feet Kingdom Tower will exceed Dubai’s 3,281-feet Nakheel Harbor and Tower, whose construction was put on hold. It would take an elevator 12 minutes to get to the top of the Kingdom Tower, The Saudi Gazette added.

12 minutes in a lift is a very long time :

Wow. Don’t know why the don’t just do a nice round mile, but still wow. Just think of the size of the fucking beer bottle you could open with it.

AE – I think it is supposed to be a mile from the second quote (5280 feet) but someone obviously couldn’t bear to have imperial units and gave the rounded metric instead.

Maybe they will be giving away beer in the lifts to keep people from dying of boredom on the way up?
