Is this a case of the UK playing poodle to the US all over again?

Most of the UK media have the following or variations on it (this from the BBC) :

The founder of whistle-blowing website Wikileaks, Julian Assange, has been granted bail in London on conditions including cash guarantees of £240,000.

But he will remain in prison pending an appeal against the bail decision lodged by Swedish prosecutors.

Which is a completely different version to this (as picked up by the Grauniad in the article link below) :

British prosecutors, rather than Swedish officials, are behind the effort to keep WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange from being granted bail, the Guardian reports.

Assange was granted bail by a London judge on Tuesday, but remained in custody reportedly because of plans by Swedish prosecutors to appeal the decision.

“But today the Swedish prosecutor’s office told the Guardian it had ‘not got a view at all on bail’ and that Britain had made the decision to oppose bail,” the newspaper reported.

“The decision was made by the British prosecutor,” Swedish prosecution service spokeswoman Karin Rosander said. “I got it confirmed by the CPS this morning that the decision to appeal the granting of bail was entirely a matter for the CPS. The Swedish prosecutors are not entitled to make decisions within Britain. It is entirely up to the British authorities to handle it.”

Assange’s lawyers “reacted with shock” the news, the Guardian reports, saying they had been informed by prosecutors it was Sweden who had insisted on the appeal.

British prosecutors will reportedly request that Assange be kept in jail until his extradition hearing is complete.

Typical of our US cocksucking masters it seems.

I wonder if they were offered payment or just promised lube next time the PM has to bend over in The Oval Office.

Seems the BBC has had a slight change of tune now Assange has been freed with a non-descript reference to “prosecutors” of no particular nationality :

The founder of whistle-blowing website Wikileaks, Julian Assange, has vowed “to continue my work and to protest my innocence” after being freed on bail.

The 39-year-old was granted bail two days ago but prosecutors objected.

He is fighting extradition to Sweden over sex assault allegations made by two women. He denies any wrongdoing.
