While Nissan reveals the pricing for it’s new Leaf electric vehicle :
In most markets in Europe, the Leaf will cost less than 30,000 euros – in the UK the price will be £23,350 – once various government subsidies have been taken into account.
But although all countries in Europe are providing subsidies for electric motoring in some way, each of them is taking a different approach, so the overall picture remains confused.
I am left wondering just how our electricity supply will cope with the added demand given it’s already fragile state :
Mainland Britain could face power shortages in the years ahead, according to the energy regulator, Ofgem.
The regulator also warned that a significant number of consumers may not be able to afford the higher energy prices they would have to face.
Ofgem said there was “reasonable doubt” about whether the energy market would be able to deliver sustainable supplies in the coming decade.
And as an aside, it’s interesting to note that the UK pricing given above appears to include a rather generous government subsidy i.e. our tax money being flung at people who already have enough to buy a £23000 car.
