Talking to people about issues such as immigration, privacy, freedom from state interference, cctv, police behaviour, the economy, taxes and general politics is getting to be pretty depressing of late. It seems to me that most people nowadays don’t read a newspaper (other than The Sun for example), don’t read anything online and rely on the BBC news as their sole information source. As such, I suppose that I shouldn’t be too surprised with the reaction I get when I do talk about any of the topics mentioned which is mostly that I am an extreme right wing tinfoil hat wearer.
In general it would seem that the majority of people I meet have bought into the government message that everything is good with the world, spending our way out of recession will work and that “something should be done” about whatever is currently top of the tabloid agenda. The constant brainwashing and lack of real informed debate seems to have produced a country full of compliant sheep.
Over at Burning our Money today, in a post entitled More Big Lies, Wat Tyler has the following point :
We’re back to a question we’ve raised before – are we as an electorate actually ready to face the reality of our predicament, or are we going to fall for another round of spin and lies, and blunder along in a daze until we actually fall over the cliff edge? Do we literally need to see the IMF roll up in their armoured limos before we’ll accept the need for serious action on public spending? Do we always need a Dunkirk before we act?
I fear that the actual reality is that people wont actually wake up to anything anymore short of outright war. Is our once great, free country really doomed to socialist dictatorship?
